Chinese violinist Xiang Yu, 21, and Canadian Kerson Leong, 13, won the senior and junior divisions respectively at the Menuhin Competition for young violinists. The start of the contest in Oslo was delayed because of the volcano-triggered flight bans in Europe, and several north American competitors were unable to make the first-round deadline. Yu, who studies with Donald Weilerstein at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, came through to take the 60,000 NOK (£6,600) top prize in his division. Leong, a student of Serhii Vyhovskyi at the Tutti Muzik Academy in Ottawa, took home 40,000 NOK (£4,400) for winning the junior division. See the June issue of The Strad for a full report on the competition.
