Samuel Rhodes is to step down as violist of the Juilliard Quartet in July 2013. Rhodes has been with the group since 1969, when he replaced the original viola player, Raphael Hillyer.

Roger Tapping, who was violist of the Takács Quartet for ten years from 1995, will replace Rhodes in September 2013. The British-born Tapping currently teaches viola and heads up the chamber music programme at the New England Conservatory in Boston, and will leave to join the Juilliard faculty.

The three other members of the quartet are Joseph Lin, who joined as first violinist in 2011; Ronald Copes, second violinist since 1997; and Joel Krosnick, cellist since 1974.
