Never give up the quest to find your own unique voice, play with love whenever you play
One of my favourite artists is a street musician from Latvia who has been touring European pedestrian zones for more than 25 years performing his unique art. Holding the valve trombone with his right hand while playing the accordion with his left, he produces sounds of indescribable beauty, despite the fact that he has repeated the repertoire thousands of times. Each moment of his music is filled with devotion and intensity whatever the external circumstances, such as ice-cold weather or blazing heat, or whether there is an audience. He does not perform music: he is the music.
I once asked him if he was happy. He answered: ‘How can a musician be happier than me? I have gigs wherever I go, I have an audience whenever I want, I am my own manager, I am independent and have a life full of music. I made my dream come true!’
Now I try to follow his example. Never give up the quest to find your own unique voice, play with love whenever you play, wherever you are and for whomever you play, even if it’s ‘only’ for yourself. This will make you as rich as only a musician can be.
