Memphis Symphony Orchestra assistant principal violist Marshall Fine has died from injuries sustained in a car crash over a week ago. The 58-year-old was also a prolific composer with over 220 works to his name, including seven viola sonatas, two viola concertos, a violin concerto and four symphonies.
Born into a musical family, the violist was son of Burton Fine, who served as Boston Symphony Orchestra principal violist from 1964 to 1996, and brother of flautist and composer Elaine Fine.
He joined the Memphis Symphony in 1980 and was a faculty member at the CICA Summer Music Festival in Dallas, Texas.
