Violinist and stringed instrument expert Staffan Borseman has died aged 60

A respected former concertmaster, the artist was founder of Stradivari Invest and creator of the Leopold bow

Tuesday, 01 July 2014

Violinist and stringed instrument dealer Staffan Borseman has died at the age of 60. Born in Västerås, Sweden on 20 October, 1953 the artist forged an international career as a soloist, chamber musician and concertmaster of the Malmö Symphony Orchestra, Danish Radio Sinfonietta and the Royal Swedish Chamber Orchestra.

Born into a musical family, Borseman performed in his first public concert at the age of five and studied the violin with Gert Crafoord, Josef Grünfarb, Tibor Varga and Jascha Brodsky.

A lifelong dealer of fine instruments he was the founder of Stradivari Invest, a company which brings fine instruments to the attention of investors who then lend them to young soloists. He was also founder of classical management agency Virtus Artists, the creator of the Leopold carbon fibre bow, and vice president of Fondazione Maestro Cremona, a non-profit organisation, founded in 2003, which acquires contemporary instruments and bows to lend free of charge to young musicians.
