Utah Symphony principal cellist Ryan Selberg dies aged 66

Tuesday, 16 July 2013

The Utah Symphony has announced that its principal cellist, Ryan Selberg, has died. He was 66. He had held the principal's chair since 1975.

Selberg studied cello with Patricia Thomsen Pinkston and Joseph di Tullio, and graduated from UCLA with a BA in Music Performance. Staying in Los Angeles, he spent two and a half seasons performing as a member of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and worked as a freelancer in Hollywood.

He then moved to Edmonton, Canada, where he was principal cellist of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra for three years and taught at Alberta College, the University of Alberta, and the Banff School of Fine Arts.

After moving to Utah and joining the Utah Symphony, he taught for 14 years at the University of Utah, and also gave private lessons. An active recitalist and chamber musician, he was artist-in-residence at the Black Glove Cello Festival in St George, and was also a featured soloist with the Utah Symphony.
