Chamber group Trio Rafale wins CHF10,000 Swiss award

Monday, 11 March 2013

The Zürich-based Trio Rafale (left) won both the first prize and the audience award at the final of the 'Migros Culture Percentage' national chamber music competition on 7 March. The trio, comprising violinist Daniel Meller, cellist Flurin Cuonz and pianist Maki Wiederkehr (all born in 1986), received a CHF10,000 (£7,000) support grant. Both Cuonz and Wiederkehr have won career grants from the Migros foundation in previous years.

At the final, held in the Zürich Tonhalle, the two runners-up were the Belenus Quartet (also based in Zürich) and the Daimones Piano Trio from Basel. Among the jury were violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja and cellist Christian Poltéra.

Created to help young chamber groups at the start of their careers, the Migros competition has been running since 1974, although this year marked only the second time that the final has been open to the public.
