This year’s BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, held yesterday at London’s Royal Albert Hall, included honours for a number of string players.
Winner of both the Best Group and Best Album categories was The Full English (pictured), a collective of today’s leading folk stars brought together by singer Fay Hield to perform music inspired by The Full English archive – the world's biggest digital collection of English traditional folk music, sponsored by the English Folk Dance and Song Society. The group includes fiddle players Seth Lakeman, Nancy Kerr and Sam Sweeney, and double bassist Ben Nicholls.
Scottish folk fiddler Aidan O’Rourke, whose trio Lau has previously been named Best Group at the Radio 2 Folk Awards on four occasions, was also named 2014 Musician of the Year, following the release of his latest album, Hotline, in July 2013.
Recognised in the Best Duo category were guitarist Phillip Henry and singer-songwriter and fiddler Hannah Martin, while young duo Greg Russell (vocals, guitar, concertina) and Ciaran Algar (fiddle, bouzouki, guitar) received the Horizon Award.
