The musician was formerly assistant principal bass of the Toronto Symphony

The Minnesota Orchestra has appointed Kristen Bruya as its new principal double bassist following an ‘extensive audition process’. The musician, who was previously assistant principal bassist of the Toronto Symphony, begins her new role this week, succeeding Matthew Frischman and Kathryn Nettleman — both current members of the section, who have been serving as acting co-principals.

‘Kristen is a highly accomplished musician, and she will be a strong leader and an excellent addition to our bass section, our orchestra and our larger community,’ said Minnesota music director Osmo Vänskä.

Bruya performed as a member of the Nashville Symphony Orchestra for four years before joining the Toronto Symphony in 2010. She has also performed with Santa Fe Opera and has played chamber music at the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival.
