No first prizes are awarded in the violin, viola and double bass categories
Italian cellist Miriam Prandi (pictured) has won first prize in her category, worth £8,000 (12,000 CHF), at the 2014 Rahn Musikpreis in Switzerland. A total of eight prizes, worth £35,000 collectively, were awarded during the biennial contest, which took place in Zurich from 19 to 21 January — although no first prizes were given in the violin, viola and double bass categories.
The Rahn competition was launched in 1976 to recognise students at Swiss conservatories and music schools. The contest is held every two years, alternatively for piano and stringed instruments. Award winners not only receive a cash prize, but also performance opportunities with the Aargau Symphony Orchestra at the Tonhalle in Zurich. This year’s jury comprised violinist Ada Pesch, violist Karen Forster, cellist Sol Gabetta and double bassist Frank Sanderell.
Miriam Prandi is also a pianist and has won first prizes in the Vittorio Veneto competition in 2001 and 2004, the Francesco Geminiani competition in Verona in 2006, and the Muzio Clementi Prize in Rome in 2007.
