Violinist Iona Brown died on 5 June 2004. Here's one of her best-known Vaughan Williams recordings, made in 1972 with Neville Marriner conducting the Academy of St Martin in the Fields. This recording was enthusiastically received on its initial release, capturing the imagination of the record-buying public.

In 1974 Brown became musical director of the Academy, but left in 1980 to take up the same role with the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra. She was appointed music adviser to the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra in 1986 and the following year became its musical director, a post she held until 1992. She was made an MBE in 1986.
