London conservatoire Trinity Laban has awarded 2016-17 Richard Carne Junior Fellowships to the Dulcinea Quartet (pictured) and American violist Stephen Upshaw.

Supporting outstanding young musicians as they make the leap from music college to the classical music profession, the fellowships provide financial assistance as well as mentoring from Trinity Laban teachers and the opportunity to work with conservatoire students. String quartets receive a bursary of £10,000, while individuals are awarded £6,000.

Formed in 2008 at the Royal Academy of Music in London, the Dulcinea Quartet – Minn Majoe, Haru Ushigusa, Martin Wray and Kirsten Jensen - have recently returned from their second tour of Japan. They are also part of ANIMA, a chamber ensemble which performs contemporary music alongside animated films.

Contemporary music specialist Stephen Upshaw studied at the New England Conservatory in Boston and has played at venues including London’s Wigmore Hall, New York’s Carnegie Hall and Vienna’s Konzerthaus.
