Joshua Bell has been named as a judge for the 2014 Miss America competition. The 45-year-old violinist will be one of seven adjudicators for the pageant, taking place on 15 September in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
Bell (pictured performing at the 2013 BBC Proms) will be joined by Lance Bass, former singer with the pop group ’N Sync; comedian Mario Cantone; investor Barbara Corcoran; television presenter Carla Hall; basketball player Amar’e Stoudemire; and obstetrician and gynaecologist Deidre Downs Gunn. A statement from the Miss America Organization explaining the diverse line-up said: ‘Accomplished in their respective fields, these national judges are experts in areas where today’s young women excel. They exude intelligence, leadership, talent, physical fitness, and dedication to community service.’
An interview with Joshua Bell, who was appointed music director of London’s Academy of St Martin in the Fields in 2011, will be published in the November 2013 issue of The Strad.
