Jazz bassist and composer Charlie Haden has been named as one of the recipients of this year’s Grammy Lifetime Achievement Awards.

Haden was honoured for his work with artists including Ornette Coleman, Chet Baker, John Coltrane and Dexter Gordon. The award citation described the 75-year-old as ‘an all-American jazz musician best known for his signature lyrical bass lines and his ability to liberate the bassist from an accompanying role’. It added: ‘Throughout his five-decade career, Haden has revolutionised the harmonic concept of bass playing and has covered such genres as free jazz, Portuguese fado and vintage country.’

The other recipients of a Lifetime Achievement Award this year are pianist Glenn Gould, singers Lightnin’ Hopkins, Carole King, Patti Page and the Temptations, and sitar virtuoso Ravi Shankar, who died this week aged 92.
