The musician is a former winner of the Szigeti and Seoul competitions
Chinese violinist Xiao Wang has been named the winner of the 45th William C Byrd International Young Artist Competition – this year dedicated to strings – and receives $6,000 and a performance with the Flint Symphony Orchestra.
Wang, who is currently studying at the Manhattan School of Music in New York, has a Bachelor’s degree from the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia. He won the Szigeti International Violin Competition in 2012 and the Seoul International Music Competition in 2015, and was a laureate of the 2015 Queen Elizabeth Violin Competition.
Second prize, worth $2,500 went to violinist Yuan Tian, while the remaining three finalists – cellists Nathan Cottrell and Samuel DeCaprio, and violist Jenni Gi Seo – each received $1,000.
Held annually at the Flint Institute of Music in the US, the competition is open to international musicians up to the age of 30. The event is dedicated alternately to strings, wind and brass, voice and piano disciplines.
