Tian-Yang-Liu

Tian Yang Liu took first prize in the International Society of Bassists (ISB) Solo Competition last week at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. The 28-year-old Chinese bassist (pictured), who studied with Jeff Bradetich at the University of North Texas and is currently a student of Scott Pingel at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, received $2,500. Second prize went to Venezuelan bassist Oscar Luque. Francesco Platoni, from Italy, took third prize.

In the ISB Makers Competition, Guy Cole, from Texas, won the gold medal. Canadian luthier Mario Lamarre took the Convention Favourite award and a silver medal for workmanship. Tetsu Suzuki, from Cremona, and Cincinnati-based Chris Roberts both won silver for tone. Anton Krutz, from Kansas, received a silver for workmanship.

The two competitions were held as part of the ISB Convention from 2–8 June.
