Sol Gabetta is to receive next year's Herbert von Karajan prize, worth €50,000. The Argentinian cellist will be awarded the accolade at the 2018 Salzburg Easter Festival, where she will also perform Schumann's Cello Concerto and a chamber music programme.

Established by Eliette von Karajan, widow of the celebrated Austrian conductor, the award was given this year for the first time in Salzburg to pianist Daniil Trifonov, marking the 50th anniversary of the Easter Festival. The prize has previously been presented at the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden since 2003.

The award is given annually 'to a musician whose exceptional artistic achievements have found global recognition. Young artists are to be awarded the prize, which will signify a special moment in their musical career.'
