The Eroica Quartet musician is an experienced educator and scholar
The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland has named David Watkin as Head of Strings of its School of Music.
The cellist and conductor was a choral scholar at Cambridge University and studied with William Pleeth before becoming principal cello with leading period ensembles including the English Baroque Soloists and L'Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique. He has also given talks and classes at conservatoires throughout Europe, conducted groundbreaking research on 19th century performance, and is a member of the Eroica Quartet.
‘I am very pleased to welcome David to our School of Music and to the Strings department,’ said RCS principal Jeffrey Sharkey. ‘His career represents the complete musician the Royal Conservatoire is renowned for educating. I know his commitment to excellence and his embrace of the practical, instrumental and collaborative aspect of music will attract and encourage students from across the world to learn in Scotland.’
